Hit The Ground Running Say Villa Fans

We all hope that we hit the ground running ahead of a new season, and this season will be no different. I say it every season, Well at least till the fixtures come out. Then before I know it, I’ve made allowances and adjustments because the fixtures have not been kind.

Surely I’m not alone in this process? Is it too much to hope, that one day we won’t need to worry or fear anyone or have to reevaluate the points were likely to get before a single ball as been kicked?. Because in the Villa ranks we will have players of similar ilk to Messi, Mbappe, De Bruyne, Oblak, Van De Beek to make sure we hit the ground running. Well, I hope so because worrying about who we going to get first, second, and third game and relying on the kindness of the fixtures and good fortune favouring us is not good for your health.

In the meantime, I’ll just have to continue to cross everything and hope for the best. That said, I am still unsure what I class as a kind start on a fixture list?. After all, it’s the Premier Leagues, but I guess not playing any of the top 6 teams would be a nice start. Although it’s not what happens in the first few games of the season, that determines our season. It can set the tone to how we continue. However, It’s still how and where we finish that matters. Survival and consolidation were all that mattered last season, with it being our first season back, well for me at least. But this season I have to see growth in our team and improvement in our finishing position.

Money Guarantees Nothing

We all know Aston Villa is going through a rebuilding process. With that knowledge, I am not sure how come some fans did not show a better understanding of our inconsistent results last season. Surely they’re an inevitable part of the building process?. Yet already it seems fans expectations have reached new levels because the media say we have another 100million transfer kitty.

Already the talk is we should make the top 10 at the very least. I’d agree for sure if we could get the players needed to take us to that next level. But having money is one thing. Being able to attract those sort of players at present, may prove more difficult. It’s not so simple when you just avoided relegation. We’re unlikely to allow ourselves to be held to ransom or break the wage structure. A 100mil is nothing in today’s inflated market. 4 x 25mil, 3 x 30mil players. How many times have Everton got top 10 or Crystal Palace in last 6 seasons?. three times Everton, once Crystal Palace respectively. Now take a look at the image below showing clubs investment over the last five years in Premier League.

Lessons Need To Be Learned

The truth is no amount of money alone invested guarantees anything. Not top 6, not top 8 or top 10. Especially not if Dean Smith fails to learn from his previous mistakes. This is key to us improving this season and Villa being able to raise the bar. Entwined with this is the club needing to recruit and strengthen in those key area’s identified where we were weak. Then look to add more quality to give our squad strength in depth. However, both club and fans alike, need to be realistic with how much improvement can be achieved over the course of the coming season with 100million cash investment.

Unless You Have A Crystal Ball

Right now, none of us knows who going to rock up at Villa Park, or for better words who we’re likely to sign. Which makes all predictions right now pie in the sky comments. Blind optimism, Of course, you can have aspirations of top 10, top 8 or even top 6. But how realistic is it considering we survived relegation by a hair on the final day.

Considering no one been signed yet I will assume and work on the basis of us improving as a unit after a full season together. Along with expecting players to cut out the previous seasons silly mistakes. I will settle for finishing anywhere between eleventh and fifteen. I await with anticipation of who will arrive, and if the fixtures are kind to us or not.

If it turns out we have a tricky start, just remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I recall the season Tim Sherwood was appointed?. Villa under Lambert hit the ground running we got off to a flyer. We took 10pts from a possible 12. Yet we stayed up by the skin of our teeth. So much for hitting the ground running.

Lol
He just doesn’t fancy Jack in his team, it happens.
I get the left wing competition Jack has but when you see Foden, Ward-Prowse & especially Mount
included in MF ?

Think Jack has to stay at Villa, get his head down and work on his maturity, he does tend to wear his heart on his sleeve. Not reacting to “all” the niggley fouls might help.

I’m a little surprised at the huge reaction to his omission, in one way I’m happy he can concentrate on AV.

Was laughing at clips of Edouard this morning, early season he had a cast on his left wrist ???
Looks a very classy player at 22, going to be a star somewhere imo.

Good news he won’t be back. I read this morning Heaton won’t be ready until October at earliest, more likely December. I do hope we give Steer a chance rather than spending silly on a new keeper again. Surely with a tighter defensive system Steer & Nyland will be fine till December?

So who have we been linked with today ?
If we believe all the links we will have a completely new side before we play our first game.

Gets worse year after year. 99% of it is complete bollox. And if you can sort out the 1% which isn’t. you are a better person than me.

Would we actually play City 1st game or would this one need to be postponed ?
I think the clubs involved in Europe get their off season extended don’t they, not sure if this would take them past the restart date.

This is the biggest news this week for me, imo he’s clearly the no.1 maybe we won’t be looking for a keeper loan now.

Yep saw earlier, not too bad, as we said yesterday we have to play them all anyway. They look better spread out than last season.
When I look at the fixtures like that I do start to think of Brian Clough … “no easy games in football”

Difficult to know whats going on, assuming reports are true that our bid was accepted ? then presumably putting in a transfer request allows him to select where he goes ? however, he is still under contract so i’m assuming RB Leipzig, or whoever, would have to match the best offer to allow this to happen.

Reports on this move get crazier, even the buy out clause is quoted at 18 mil, then 30+, then i see a “valuation” of 38 mil !

I initially read buy out clause was only 18 mil (euros or pounds ?) TBH I thought that was the major reason we were interested lol

I see Brewster on loan from Liverpool mentioned today as well as Cervi, winger from Benfica.
Two new names I hadn’t heard mentioned before.
The list grows ! ?

I think they have to have been talking to Jack, McGinn & Mings, amoungst others already, don’t see the fact the players are away has much to do with it, after all it’s the agents that they negotiate with primarily. I imagine there were already clauses detailing bonuses and/or increased salary if we stayed up.
Perhaps a sit down to explain logic in new offers could be happening today after training session. Jack the obvious worry and slightly different for me, but don’t see the others moving they would have signed new contracts beginning of last season.

I think the Luiz buyback is bollocks tbh. They would have had to activate that clause at the end of the regular season you would think. He continued on with us after lockdown, a contract clause would not have envisaged the covid crisis, but must be a set time for them to activate the clause which won’t have changed.
I think the fact I & others had to put up with his indifferent form week after week pre lockdown ? and he still started, more or less indicates he has a certain high percentage of games he must start in to justify the legal visa requirements, can’t see Pep being handcuffed by having to play him every week, despite the huge improvement.

Mate I’d sign for Villa anytime ?

Obviously we don’t know for sure what the details are, im just speculating they would have to inform us of their intentions prior to the window opening, (so end of June under a normal season), otherwise in theory they could activate the clause on the last day of the window. I can’t see us having agreed to that no matter how desperate we were for a DM at the time.

I cant see any new deal we offer him cancelling out a prior clause of the initial sale, but i could be wrong, players have a lot of power these days.

Interesting the comments surrounding Rashica, I don’t blame him holding out for european football tbh, but for some he’s turned from Villa superstar to judas in less than 24 hrs !

Yeah, Luiz story is strange one, I suspect general hysteria after getting knockout of CL, new team needed ! ??? like Barca.
The teams that have built slowly, Leipzieg, Lyon seem to be doing better, a better model for us to follow.

Glad you’re ok, good time to do blog maintenance before the signing storm ?
