It’s A Big Season For Club & Head Coach

It’s a big season for Villa & Dean Smith. Our owners have shown their ambition by again investing heavily in the playing squad. Now Dean Smith must push us on again. For me our recruitment has gone up a level this summer. We seem to have targeted that higher quality type of player which will not only fill the void left by Jack but also enable the club to kick on.

I am curious if the departure of Jack maybe raised concerns among the hierarchy. Did it make them think they needed to expedite their plan of qualifying for Europe. For fear of losing other key players down the line ? So it’s a big season for us in that sense, so we need to kick on.

Pushing for Europe

We know Danny Ings & Ashley Young bring a wealth of experience. But they offer little to no sell on value. The signing of these two clearly shows a shift in our recruitment policy of buying players with the potential to improve and increase in value.

It appears the club believe they can provide that quality to help our push for a European place. Both are excellent signings, surely our fans have to be happy we are adding these sorts of players into the mix. Danny Ings’ scoring record is phenomenal & Ashley Young ain’t come to make up the numbers, he’s more than a utility player.

Recruitment

Just like last season we have again taken the best player out of the championship. Last season it was Ollie Watkins. He scored 14 PL goals & could have 20 plus. This time we’ve taken Emi Buendia. I believe he will equally be a success and by the end of the season we will be saying what a bargain.

However the player that excites me the most out of all our new signings is Leon Bailey. He looks like a baller, I have no doubt he will get bums off their seats. It was only a couple of seasons ago he was being tracked by some of Europe’s biggest clubs. His value being touted then was more than double what we have paid. The idea that he turned down Man City to join Leverkusen because it was better for his development at the time brings a big smile to my face. I love him already for that alone.

It’s a big Season

I’ve seen so little of Morgan Sansom it’s impossible to form an opinion on him. So my only concern at present is that we’re a bit light in midfield, that’s where we need to strengthen before the window shuts. We have a solid defence with strong attacking options. We just need that player who can boss the midfield.Who has good ball retention. If we get that player then I see no reason why we cant get in that top six.

That said, given the ambition of our owners and the investment being put into our club. If we take a backward step  and by that I mean we finish lower than last season’s eleventh place finish, then I wouldnt be surprised to see Dean Smith relieved of his duties.

Opening Game

Our opening game this weekend is against Watford. It has probably come just to soon for Emi Buendia & Leon Bailey. Emi is injured and so doubtful and Leon as been in isolation. So he’s not trained with the squad. So Newcastle is probably where they’re going to both feature.

Finally while the media are likely to see us as being weaker having lost Jack. Frank Lampard, knows our recruitment has been impressive this summer. He tipped us to be a surprise package like West Ham were last season.

Looking forward to hearing the details of this new format.

UEFA are poised to replace the current Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules with a salary cap and luxury tax, according to reports.

The current regulations were introduced 11 years ago and state clubs must balance their books over a three-year period.

European football’s governing body announced earlier this year that they would review its FFP rules following the financial crisis triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new proposals will be unveiled at a convention on the future of European football hosted by UEFA in Switzerland next month

Did Dean Smith have his poker face on ?

In today’s presser Smith was asked about further signings. He replied “No, I think we’re quite satisfied at the moment. We’ve got a really healthy squad.”

The boss was asked about JWP but he refused to comment.

Smith says Emi Buendia & Leon Bailey are both available for selection the only doubt is Ollie Watkins who as brusing to his knee, he will be assessed today..

I agree about most of that post. I suggested a while back maybe we’d try to accelerate things and the Ings & Young signings are different from recent recruitment.

I think Europe is clearly the goal this season. Coming close I wouldn’t be too disappointed but a good opportunity to strengthen right now, and add the required depth. Why I think two more in.

My take on those two positions…

It seems clear from links a DM in the athletic, youngster to develope mould is a target (Anguissa, Sarr, Doucore), Nakamba more than capable of holding his own until we sign one and their up to speed.

Smith said this week that Buendia was coming anyway, so not a replacement for Alice band. He also said Watkins is a striker and signed as one. That surely means we are still short a creative LW/CAM.
Links to Correa, JWP, ESR, Cantwell suggest this is also true, although JWP (unlikely imo) could suit either position.

These are the two positions I think we’ll bring in.

In the meantime there’s the possibility of Ings playing as the creator from deeper behind Watkins, or them switching or whatever other different plan DS may have. Especially if Buendia still has a knock.
This highlights the need for another CAM. If Buendia is out or played on the RW, if he’s found to be better wide, the creativeness then comes from Ings, Ramsey or Chucky?
McGinn or Sansone might play a role there later I suppose.
We seem to have too many midfielders that do a bit of everything rather than established DM’s or AM’s, just my take.
I’d be open to offers for Luiz & Hourihane who aren’t DM’s and aren’t the required standard for AM or dominating box to box players. Might we see Axel as a DM?

Really looking forward to the start of the season and seeing how this develops.
