Onwards & Upwards A Season Of Content

Onwards & upwards we go, regardless if we make the top ten or not after playing our last four games. It’s fair to say it’s been a fairly successful season for Aston Villa football club. 2020/21 as seen us make significant improvement.

Of course it could have been even better. But given where we were twelve months ago. Villa fans have to be content with the progress made this campaign.

Summer Transfers

Our transfer business last summer has been the catalyst to our progress this season. So I am really excited at the prospect of what Johan Lange may deliver this summer. Quality additions that improve our starting 11 are a must. The fact we will not be seen as potential relegation candidates can only help Johan achieve this.

Ambitions & Aspirations

We have owners who are very ambitious make no mistake about that. If they have to make changes to achieve that ambition or speed that process up, then they will.

Like our owners we all have our preferences. I’m sure we’re all aware by now, that some of our fanbase would like to see a Dean Smith replaced at the end of this season. I have heard many reasons why he needs replacing. But I have not heard a single valid reason to date. Honestly you would think we have not seen progression every season under Dean Smith since his arrival.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one because for me, Dean Smith has not only earned the right to continue in his role next season, but to spend big on two or three quality additions.

If you think Dean Smith should have taken us into Europe this season. Then tell me the last team who went from staying up on the last game of the previous season, to then qualifying for Europe the following season?.

The Table Never Lies

Onwards & upwards, our owners have invested heavily in our club & continue to do so. But they have not invested the amount it takes to challenge for European places in reality. They’re slowly putting all the elements in place that will enable Villa to have the best chance of challenging for honours going forward.

So with further investment this summer, what positions do you think Villa need to invest in to improve our starting 11 next season?.

I know a lot of our fans hold some of our youth in high esteem, but until they physically mature they’re unlikely to be able to compete at the top level yet regardless how good a baller they are.

Long Overdue

I apologise for neglecting my duties. It’s unexcusable really, but I have had some personal issues and demons to deal with. My right hand man Begley who stepped up to the plate during my prolonged absence, as now gone AWOL. So it’s been quite a while since a new leader was put up.

It’s been a challenge typing out a leader on a mobile, what with my big fingers & little keys. Not that it’s a valid excuse for churning out this load of tripe, but i promise to endeavour in the future so please accept my apologies.

Might need recruits soon, Ollie, Buendia, Bailey, Sanson, Luiz could all be doubtful for Watford. Good news is I think that back 7 are nailed on.
Great to see Ings on the scoresheet already, friendly or not and I think Young is now in contention for filling in at LW.
Nakamba excellent again today.

There were a lot of mediocre players over the years mate. I still can’t believe at one time I was paying good money regularly to go and watch Ian Olney partner Nigel Callaghan ! 🙄

Well we haven’t had much of a pre season, shame was looking forward to a near full strength team test against a good Sevilla side at a noisy VP. Looks like the first big test will be Watford for proper now.

I’m still expecting some signings, need an experienced back up keeper, not sure they’ll risk just Steer and the kids. Can’t start the season with only 3 CB’s & Revan is injured anyway. I’d be happy with Axel even if only a loan.
CB & experienced older keeper should be fairly easy and relatively inexpensive, big question is who else do we bring in.
Has to be a creative AM for me. Buendia can play that role but we need one more regardless with Jack gone.
Seen a link to Joaquin Correa today, good player by all accounts, AM/LW/2nd ST type, 26 plays for Lazio, 33 mil originally ? but could go for a lot less, another Argentina international.

DM might still be on the cards, might we go back for young Sarr?

Think with Jack gone any thoughts of not bringing too many in at once might be revisited, we need depth and options.

Did some research and from what I could find we’re back with 3 subs and 7 on the bench. Typical as soon as we get some depth 🙄

Slight rule changes for handball, a bit more common sense as far as deliberate or not and var is going to be drawing “thicker lines” for the offside rule, in other words more leeway given, with the armpit as the part of the body measured. So should be no more toes or hands off side.
All sounds good but shouldn’t take too long for some controversy I’m sure.

I did think the refs and var set up at the Euros was as good as I’ve seen. Not only were the refs generally very good but var decisions were taken quickly & efficiently. I loved the way the ref was directed to take a look at the monitor if a decision looked iffy, hope we see a bit more of that.
Just like the last world cup they got a good efficient system working swiftly that didn’t miss much. Not sure why it’s so difficult to do that at PL level.

No friendly tomorrow so less chance for Smith to give them all a run out
Team for opener
Expect same back 4 plus keeper
Then would guess mcginn emi Ings and Watkins will be gaurenteed starters only leaving 2 spaces of what I guess will be like Liverpool 433 formation
Luis won’t be available to probably September, bailey will take a few weeks to get up speed, along with rumors Bert and sansom still not recovered from injuries so leaving us light
Would expect Marv and elgazi will get the nod to start with subs coming from ash Fred hause Carney phidace Ramsay Wes bailey

We are still 2 maybe 3 big signings short,
Keeper and defence probably need a experienced keeper even just for training purposes, and one centre half
Midfield would really love a big strong defensive type, still wondering who or what type sansom is
Attack 3 new lads plus Watkins and Bert look great but would love another
Then add phidace Carney and Ramsay bros would look in great shape

Looking pretty competitive to me as it stands. Trouble with the big strong defensive midfield types is that they will spend half the season suspended.

Been watching a lot of stuff about Bailey. He’s some player, could easily be as good as Grealish.

From what I can see, McGinn is Smith’s first name on the teamsheet. And is going to play 100% of games.
