Onwards & Upwards A Season Of Content

Onwards & upwards we go, regardless if we make the top ten or not after playing our last four games. It’s fair to say it’s been a fairly successful season for Aston Villa football club. 2020/21 as seen us make significant improvement.Β

Of course it could have been even better. But given where we were twelve months ago. Villa fans have to be content with the progress made this campaign.

Summer Transfers

Our transfer business last summer has been the catalyst to our progress this season. So I am really excited at the prospect of what Johan Lange may deliver this summer. Quality additions that improve our starting 11 are a must. The fact we will not be seen as potential relegation candidates can only help Johan achieve this.

Ambitions & Aspirations

We have owners who are very ambitious make no mistake about that. If they have to make changes to achieve that ambition or speed that process up, then they will.

Like our owners we all have our preferences. I’m sure we’re all aware by now, that some of our fanbase would like to see a Dean Smith replaced at the end of this season. I have heard many reasons why he needs replacing. But I have not heard a single valid reason to date. Honestly you would think we have not seen progression every season under Dean Smith since his arrival.Β

We will have to agree to disagree on this one because for me, Dean Smith has not only earned the right to continue in his role next season, but to spend big on two or three quality additions.Β

If you think Dean Smith should have taken us into Europe this season. Then tell me the lastΒ team who went from staying up on the last game of the previous season, to then qualifying for Europe the following season?.

The Table Never Lies

Onwards & upwards, our owners have invested heavily in our club & continue to do so. But they have not invested the amount it takes to challenge for European places in reality. They’re slowly putting all the elements in place that will enable Villa to have the best chance of challenging for honours going forward.

So with further investment this summer, what positions do you think Villa need to invest in to improve our starting 11 next season?.

I know a lot of our fans hold some of our youth in high esteem, but until they physically mature they’re unlikely to be able to compete at the top level yet regardless how good a baller they are.

Long Overdue

I apologise for neglecting my duties. It’s unexcusable really, but I have had some personal issues and demons to deal with. My right hand man Begley who stepped up to the plate during my prolonged absence, as now gone AWOL. So it’s been quite a while since a new leader was put up.

It’s been a challenge typing out a leader on a mobile, what with my big fingers & little keys. Not that it’s a valid excuse for churning out this load of tripe, but i promise to endeavour in the future so please accept my apologies.

Hope everyone’s having a good summer, baking hot here.
Safegate’s approach seems to be working even if it’s not super entertaining, sort of a McCleish approach with better players. Could we go all the way ?
TG Sancho is signed πŸ™„ not sure I could take much more !
Jack saga will be over soon and he ain’t going anywhere.

Fancy us to sign a couple more and it looks like we’ll be bidding for ESR for a 3rd time. We must really want him and has to be more to it then reported, surely with this regime we wouldn’t waste our time with 3 bids if there wasn’t something to it.
I sort of like the transfer window speculation but some of the media really show themselves up, top clubs linked to expensive players when we know full well two of em have no money !
B’ham mail really poor for transfer “news” Do they really think we take Gabby & Hendrie seriously ? 🀣

Be well all

It will all come down to Jack. If he wants to leave then we will have no choice really, only issue will be maximizing the fee. I still can’t see it myself and think he’ll stay but I also find it a bit ironic, fans have been over the top with comments about Jack playing for England for a couple of years, now he’s there and involved there’s a possibility he may have had his head turned 😎

I think he’ll stay too and reward will be an improved contract. I agree his valuation has to be well over 100 mil.
Could be a big moment for AV securing Jack and sending a clear message to the top six. We are simply not a selling club anymore.

So it’s the Germans at wembley then. I think we’ll be okay with that. Another defensive display I expect but think we have enough to beat them.
With all the negative comments I’m reading with Jack taken off I was actually thinking it’s good looking at the bigger picture maybe saving our Jack for the next game.

Alvarez agent arriving in Europe this Thursday, love to see us get this lad in. I think there could be a couple more yet. I liked Tuanzebe when we had him on loan but shocked to read he still says his goal is a regular place at utd!, time for us to move on, just like Rashica, there’s no cure for stupidity.

I think we have enough to beat them without being overtly defensive. Southgate will play 7 defensive players in front of Pickford. Not the way to play the game for me, especially given all the talent he has available. Not sure I’m with you on your assessment of Jack’s place in the side. He’ll be on the bench again on Tuesday. Mount will play and we’ll have a front two of Sterling and Kane. Mings will be out too I reckon, now his favourite is back.
Be great to see us sign this Argentinian kid, from what I can gather he could be something special. I too like Tuanzebe but just can’t see where he could fit in now.

Seeing links to Neco Williams who we don’t need, (safegate school of collecting RB’s ? 😁)
Rumoured to be upping the bid for Smith-Rowe, this rumour doesn’t seem to be going away.
Originally I thought maybe one more addition but maybe more, who knows.

Not sure I can remember 4 PL teams without managers at this point in a summer.
Safegate for Spurs ! 🀣🀣🀣

Arsenal fans already in meltdown. Safegate for spurs would put them in meltdown as well. I feel for them. 🀣🀣

I’m liking the link to the young river plate player, Alvarez, 20 yrs old RW, highly rated apparently. Been scoring and assisting for fun last season.
Sounds like a Lange type punt.
At this rate we’ll be eligible to play the first team in the u23’s competitions 😎

I’m not understanding why if Gilmore has tested positive and in isolation Mount & Chilwell can’t play because they hugged him, yet all the other Scottish players are still allowed to play?
Not the first time I’m not understanding some of the covid protocols from uefa, Canadian fed government, provincial government or most governments lol.

Love to see Jack start and Kane hit the net a couple of times tomorrow.

If it was me I’d start Grealish, Foden, Rashford & Mount behind Kane.
4141 with Phillips DM and let the defenders defend. Chilwell also has to start imo.
England have to move the ball quicker and attack, this slow paced backwards & sideways wins nothing.
I might even be tempted to go 433 and have the FB’s provide the width.
Strikes me Southgate is trying to play a system none are really used to or enjoy at club level.
Sterling has been useless needs to sit out & Henderson, Walker, Maguire are not the answer Gareth.
I have a feeling it might get even more embarrassing.

Safegate 🀣
Yes he was a terrible manager, but clearly a yes man πŸ˜‰
I’d stick with Kane but needs support, we have the players to do well but aweful tactics. Even if you think stay safe and qualify first, how we going to change mindset for the knockout stage. Sterling has even been dropped a lot by Pep. No logic to this England set up, as usual.
Big Sam was set up, would have been good. As jcv said there was a reason Clough never got the job in the past and it seems we haven’t moved on from there.
Actually think Eddie Howe would make a good England manager.

I wouldn’t have started Jack either but to bring him on, switch Sterling to the right, and then only pass to Sterling was mind boggling. The best attacker on the park was easily Foden, subbed first? I could live with the 2 defensive midfield approach IF we played the right attackers. We have to let the CB’s do their job we don’t need 2 DM’s. Rice is possibly the most overrated player in the PL. Also thought the game was crying out for a pressing CF, shame Ollie is not there.

Hope Jack doesn’t start, the Scots will kick him to bits. Later sub when they’ve tired is okay and he can start the next one in readiness for the knockout stages. Walker needs to be dropped & Phillips needs to continue in his role as does Mings.
Come on England !

Hope we don’t sign Ramsey, part of the problem at Arsenal imo, wanting to play ticky tacky football through the middle. Huge wages and definitely an injury prone player if ever there was on. Hoping this is just a rumour/paper talk.

I’m reading we have had a bid for Smith-Rowe of 25 mil rejected by Arsenal. Been widely reported so i assume some truth to this. Would be a nice addition and more importantly some evidence we are looking to add another AM to our squad.
Arsenal fans must be so sick of us by now 🀣
In effect, we will force them to either sell or commit to offering him a much improved contract to keep him. 21 yrs old and i think two seasons left on his deal, fits our remit perfectly and you would think they need to raise some funds based on some expensive players they are being linked to.

Ashley Young on a free sounds plausible as back up to Targett, but not sure how I feel about that.

Not sure about Ashley Young either. He couldn’t wait to leave us last time he was here ! It would be another one of those final pay day players – I’d much rather see us playing the youth instead.

The more I think about it this could be a smart move. As you say excellent utility cover and experience for nothing. Makes us more capable of some rotation if required and certainly an upgrade on Taylor.
Loved his interview and tbh I never blamed him for moving on, it worked for him, he got his winners medals. I think possibly mon’s best signing for us.
I wish him luck.

Yes, worrying they are still having to manage his training, fitness.
England would be better if they played at a PL pace and weren’t quite so defensive. Talented team if set up right. On the other hand teams that take a defensive approach have always done well in tournaments. Southgate’s doing neither by picking Walker & Trippier and largely ignoring the in form players.
Worth watching the other day for the Calvin Phillips performance, but you just know Henderson will be back in at some point 😎

Transfer business started early, major signing over the line. I have a feeling Buendia may not be the only AM / Winger we sign this window. I’m reading the asking price for Pereira is 15 mil, could do a lot worse.
Also see we are touted as frontrunners for England u16 captain Josh Feeney a CB.
I do like the way we are approaching business under this regime.

Welcome to Emi Buendia
33 mil + add ons I guess is the going rate for a “finished” player of any quality. Still an outrageous amount for me but I grew up in the seventies !
Let’s hope he works out for us, no.1 target acquired early beating Arse to his signature, can’t be bad.
Looking forward to seeing him playing in claret & blue 😎

Buendia links are not going away, as much as I like to take things with a pinch of salt until they’re actually having a medical at VP, you’ve got to think there is something in this one.
Great player in a position we really do require to get stronger. Would be somewhat of a coup if we get him over Arsenal and a sign decent players know how well we are being run and organized these days.

Hope everyone’s well and enjoying a bit of warm weather and sunshine 🌞

My thoughts on some of the players we’re rumoured to be after…

Aquissa represents something of a bargain compared to Bissouma, as does Pereira, compared to Buendia. I’d also be looking at Chambers from our neighbour’s, think he’s underrated.
Daniel James could also do a job for us RW.
I think we’ll be outbid, or should I say we won’t pay big fees, for some of the rumoured links but I do hope we get Buendia. I think he’ll fit in nicely and would be a player capable of stepping up when Jack is unavailable. Two Emi’s in the same team ! 😁 hoping the Argentina connection might encourage Buendia, considering what an impact Martinez has had and how he’s clearly loved his 1st season.
Not sure we would be able to fund both Buendia & McNeil but you never know.

As usual trying not to get too excited about links in the media and not expecting us to spend a fortune but think any new signings will have experience in English leagues as that plan worked so well for us last summer.

Think Kante demonstrated the way a very good DM can influence a game yesterday, might have a few managers taking that point in. Luiz is not a DM in my view and I think Nakamba was fantastic for us last two games of the season, love to see Anguissa from Fulham as competition for the two.

I shall try very hard not to take any notice of the links to new players. It’s pretty well all clickbait and I just can’t tell if there is ever any mileage in any of it.
I agree Nakamba played well in the last couple of games and he seems to be a better fit than Luis (who is not a DM, I agree).
