Project Restart: Match Day at Villa Park

Many disagree with Project Restart but I suspect we are all happy that today is Match Day and Sheffield United visit Villa Park. Live Premier League action is back and after 100 long days of abstinence, we have a feast of football to look forward to during the next 6 weeks. And what better way to start off than with Aston Villa versus Sheffield United.

Belief and Heart

We need to leave the disappointment of our previous 28 games at the door. It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time. There is nothing we can do to influence Dean Smith’s team selection nor his tactics. Today is all about belief and heart. We the fans have had a tough season and a very tough 3 months but today that all ends. Today is the start of a new beginning for Aston Villa Football Club. Today we return! So let’s have a bit of banter, a few beers and sit back and enjoy live football and then perhaps a few more beers.

I think tonight’s game is going to be very difficult to call as both Villa and Sheffield United will be new to playing in an empty stadium. Neither team has played competitive football in over 3 months and full contact training has only started in the last couple of weeks. Project Restart has come about very quickly leaving little time for teams to prepare. So I expect to see a lack of fitness and a scrappy game. However, I also expect to see every Villa player wear the shirt with pride and at an absolute minimum, offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. The team with the fewest errors will in all likelihood come out victorious. But just maybe I am wrong and just maybe a little magic from Grealish and McGinn will create the chances for Villa to kick off the season restart with 3 much-needed points.

Well it wasn’t the result we wanted but we were the better team by far.
Good performances from Davies unlucky again, Henderson made a couple of world class saves, Hourihane linked up well, my mate Luiz looked very good and didn’t look at all lost for a change. Thought we kept possession better and moved the ball well. McGinn is obviously off the pace as are a few others but not a bad first game back for me. I dont remember them having a shot on target and I think we had 14 shots, 6 on target.

I know that won’t be good enough for some but after the long lay off, no crowd and all the rest of the craziness there’s still 24 points to play for and if we show up like we did today, keep mistakes to a minimum & create as many chances, I think we are in with a very good chance of staying up.

Went for a good walk but still seething at Smith
Team selection crazy ,subs far too late and no vasselv, jack wasted out wide, wonder if samatta had got chances like davies 2 would he have done better, conor was he playing, about dozen corners and not one dangerous, we concede a stupid free and lo and behold only from a clanger from Hawkeye we got away with an awful clanger, only time davies has put something in the net

I just can’t see Smith leaving before the end of the season. Do u think we have enough in us to stay up? Is a point against a top 6 team necessarily a bad result?

They are not a top 6 side they were promoted with us,they had nothing really to play for, were you happy with Smith’s team selections or subs, why not use vasselv or jota ,mcginn should have been subbed 10mins into 2nd half to avoid burnout in 1st game but like before his injury smith kept him on

The selection baffled me but I didn’t realise Guilbert and Engels were injured. I would have started Nakamba ahead of Hourihane too. Regarding the subs, I would have liked to see Davis and Samatta on the pitch together so I would have kept Davis on till the 2nd substitution.

right,
well its a level playing field for all clubs now having to play behind closed doors.
so lets see how the other clubs cope with it.

So, I guess that’s a fair result in the end. The Nyland own goal was cancelled out for me by a blatant penalty not given. Mings was clearly hauled down and VAR was absent. For me, that was the officials trying to make amends for their cock up in the first half.

Yes a poor return to football for the PL and technology. Good to get a clean sheet. If we can follow that up with another point against Chelsea I will be happy

I was surprised by how well we defended. Looked a lot more shaky when Nakamba came on. Hourihane had a decent game, McGinn looked like he needed the run out. Davis was unlucky to have come up against an exceptional keeper. ElGhastly isn’t up to it – I would have preferred Trezeguet.

Yes, we didn’t have the look of a rabbit in the headlights which I have seen too often this season. Davis looks good, if only he could score. Of our defence i was most nervous with Nyland. I don’t think he will start against Chelsea. I would go for Steer or Reina ahead of him

DS said a couple of days ago besides Heaton and Wesley everyone was fit.
Tonight we had 2 players injured before a ball was kicked in anger, what happened?

Very little information on it, maybe training. Same as The Blades. Yesterday morning they had a fully fit squad and today they had two key players out.

have you noticed with DS,
its always the same old every time.
if he starts with el ghazi,we know that trez will come on for him.
and vice versa.
he never tries anything different.

A big question is do we need the wins or just grind out some results and get 1 or 2 wins. The other teams have tough run ins too. It is all about finishing above 3 others as opposed to finishing with a flourish.

yes but the other teams have beaten top clubs, something we have failed to do all season.

After 29 games there are 4 of us within 1 point of each other. If the others are beating top 6 and we are not then they must be losing to lower teams where we are not.

I am not trying to suggest it is easy but the other teams have really difficult run ins too. Also, some of them have games against each other so there will have to be points dropped. I think Expat called it right about 6 months ago. We look like we are going to have a 1 off game against the Hammers on the final day and winner stays up and looser goes down

There is a lot of talk on social media suggesting that Villa should have let Sheffield walk the ball into the net like Leeds did for us

Nothing to get too excited about.
Haven’t conceded which is a positive , but look a little toothless up front.
It’s a point but it still leaves us in the bottom 3 and failure to beat Chelsea on Sunday is going to make things extremely difficult.

Our headers so far, from set pieces, seem more like cushioned headers back to the keeper, no power in them at all.
