You can only be so optimistic before reality takes over, and for me anyway, the penny finally dropped after last night, I have now accepted relegation will occur. I have tried to keep believing we would get out of the mess, as relegation is a horrible thing to contemplate. But only a miracle of epic proportions can change our fate now.
As much, as Dean Smith should carry the can for relegation if it happens this season. The board will be equally responsible, for not replacing him. We will never know, had they done so, would things have turned out differently. But some fans will say, well at least we would have given ourselves a better chance of survival. That point is hard to argue against as It previously worked when we sacked Paul Lambert and employed Tim Sherwood.
Whatever the reason for the board, not doing so, be it naivety or just wanting some stability, or they were just optimistic he could turn it around. It’s now looking not only to have been the wrong decision but an expensive one.
Recruitment was a combined effort, and between them, Smith, Purslow and Suso, have made a pig’s ear of it. They did take huge gambles on players being good enough this season and then increasing in value, and it’s gone tits up. Not sure who did the scouting, but their judgements are very questionable. So for me, if Dean Smith goes then so must the other two.
If and when the inevitable happens, how will you feel if Smith’s kept on for our championship campaign?. Will you be content, disappointed, fuming, or even optimistic we could bounce straight back?. If you’re unhappy with Smith remaining, then who would you like to see come in and replace Smith?. Try to be realistic.
Anyway to the here and now, with 4 games remaining it’s still possible even if highly unlikely we could retain our Premier League status. I may not be optimistic now. But It’s hard for me to completely throw the towel in when it’s still mathematically possible.
