You Can Only Be So Optimistic

You can only be so optimistic before reality takes over, and for me anyway, the penny finally dropped after last night, I have now accepted relegation will occur. I have tried to keep believing we would get out of the mess, as relegation is a horrible thing to contemplate. But only a miracle of epic proportions can change our fate now.

As much, as Dean Smith should carry the can for relegation if it happens this season. The board will be equally responsible, for not replacing him. We will never know, had they done so, would things have turned out differently. But some fans will say, well at least we would have given ourselves a better chance of survival. That point is hard to argue against as It previously worked when we sacked Paul Lambert and employed Tim Sherwood.

Whatever the reason for the board, not doing so, be it naivety or just wanting some stability, or they were just optimistic he could turn it around. It’s now looking not only to have been the wrong decision but an expensive one.

Recruitment

Recruitment was a combined effort, and between them, Smith, Purslow and Suso, have made a pig’s ear of it. They did take huge gambles on players being good enough this season and then increasing in value, and it’s gone tits up. Not sure who did the scouting, but their judgements are very questionable. So for me, if Dean Smith goes then so must the other two.

If and when the inevitable happens, how will you feel if Smith’s kept on for our championship campaign?. Will you be content, disappointed, fuming, or even optimistic we could bounce straight back?. If you’re unhappy with Smith remaining, then who would you like to see come in and replace Smith?. Try to be realistic.

Anyway to the here and now, with 4 games remaining it’s still possible even if highly unlikely we could retain our Premier League status. I may not be optimistic now. But It’s hard for me to completely throw the towel in when it’s still mathematically possible.

JCV i will leave you with an oldy.

Goodnight all

A young man goes into a pharmacy & says to the pharmacist,
“Hello, could you give a condom i’m going to my girlfriends
for dinner & i think i may be in with a chance!”

The pharmacist gives him the condom & as the young man is going out; he returns & says,
“Give me another condom because my girlfriends sister is very cute too. She always crosses her legs in a provocative manner when she sees me & i think i might strike it lucky there too.”

The pharmacist gives him a second condom & as the boy is leaving he turns back & says, “Go on give me one more condom because my girlfriends mum is pretty cute & when she sees me she always makes eyes & since she invited me for dinner, i think she is expecting me to make a move!”

During dinner the young man is sitting with his girlfriend on his left, the sister on the right & the mum facing him.

When the dad gets there, the boy lowers his head & starts praying; “Dear Lord, bless this dinner & Thank you for all you give us.”
A minute later the boy is still praying; “Thank you Lord for your kindness.” Ten minutes go by & the boy is still praying keeping his head down. The others look at each other surprised & his girlfriend is even more surprised than the others.

She gets close to the boy & says in his ear, “I didn’t know you were so religious.”
The boy replies, “I didn’t know your dad was a pharmacist!”

mate,
my eldest daughter had to have one of her dogs put down a couple of months ago.
and shes had a breakdown over it.
and thats just a pet,
thankfully with treatment she is slowly recovering.
the only problem is,that her other dog is getting old.and shes had that one since a puppy.
the other one was a rescue dog that she took on.

I got a cousin who is exactly like that, she couldn’t have children either and her pets/dogs became her babies and her world.

looking back,
is anybody else pissed off like me with our club going for second rated or so called up and coming managers.
some talk about Dyche or Wilder.
yes they are doing great at their level, where expectations are limited.

ro manage a club like ours,we need the next level up.
unless we are now happy to be a yo yo club like Norwich.

We have never ever had a top manager who i classed as top level at the time since Big Ron who had managed Man U

Graham Taylor had done a good job at Watford but was still a huge risk – Brian Little an ex player big risk as was Gregory the fact they had relative success was the era and them knowing the club, neither would repeat it now days imo, Ron Saunders our greatest of all modern day managers had only league cup success before coming to us yet brought us our greatest glory in modern times.

Not sure why Wilder in particular would leave Sheffield. Dyche is probably a safe pair of hands but I would think he’d be looking for a bit more of a step up, although we could probably offer him the transfer funds he’s never really had.
I agree we need a top class manager but not sure we’ll get that in the championship.
We really need to stay up to attract the best options.

on managers
That list is grim reading, Hughton maybe but hardly ambitious on our part.
I still like the idea of a bigger name Fonseca, Pocc or Rafa but they won’t manage in the championship.
I think I’d be looking at someone like Claude Puel or Marco Silva both good tactical managers who may be okay with champo and a quick return if the money we offer is right.

Rafa did ok in the Chanpionship though, so he may be an option (notwithstanding his relationship with Purslow)

He got a big cash incentive to stay with Toon on relegation it’s a bit different to joining a chumps club

It’s pretty obvious our fans are not very patient so either the board show some balls or we again jump on the merry go round.

For all the talk of Dyce now, he got relegated with Burnley not so long ago, he’s learned his trade in the top flight with them and now looks like a manager who can bring a club stability. but that’s about it. I see nothing exciting in his tactics whenever i watched Burnley Smith out witted him at turf moor ffs.

I think we all would prefer a foreign manager like silva or puel etc but i doubt we can attract them certainly not from the chumps.

Suso was our oveseas player spotter.
DS is the manager i assume in charge of uk signings.
he is also in chatge at bodymoor heath.
Perslow is the man that ties all these things together.

he is also the man who employed Hodgson at liverpool,
employed DS and gave him a 4 year contract instead of his cards.

for me,they can all go.

Suso he’s a sporting director not a director of football, slightly different roles he’s more a middle man an extra pair of hands someone to carry out duties old fashioned managers undertook before the game went barmy.

Well fans are easily pissed off and not necessarily the best judges to follow if your a C.E.O i think they will keep Smith and if anyone goes it’s likely to be Suso

I mention Stride the other day he was a very good CEO. Took some balls to walk when everyone else was creaming themselves over Lerners money & impending investment.
With hindsight that should have been a huge red flag to us all.
The CEO I really admired recently was Nicolas Coetese at Southampton he structured that club so well, sold most of their acadamey to Liverpool for huge money, brought in Pocc …
I believe he left when the club was sold, owner died and his daughter hired Coetese to sort it out and make them sellable.
Not sure if he’s involved in football any longer.

It’s very worrying if these are the out of work managers – unless the club are going to look further afield should they sack Smith.

Tony Pulis
Chris Hughton
Gary Rowett
Sam Allardyce
Nigel Adkins
Alan Pardew
Sol Campbell
Garry Monk

Does anyone think Purslow would be so stupid as to give Smith a 4 year contract without some clause about relegation ? They could have someone lined up.

admin

I think it was an extension to his initial contract something of a reward for him leading us to promotion, perhaps not even 5 mil in total value. I do not see it having any bearing on future decisions the club might be forced to make.
